Parts of the mission
MATE 2009
below is a list of the tasks that need to be accomplished in the MATE underwater vehicle competition. As we discover additional tasks that need to be solved, we can build the list.
- locating the damage points -
- open the air hose -
- Installing the air hose -
- open the hatch -
- remove the pod -
- store the pod -
- transfer the people -
- close the hatch -
- build the props -
- make the display -
- document the work of the class - All students document their work with text, photos and video.

1The first choice would be the arm. I think the best approach is one arm to do everything except the safety pod.
One arm to pick up the safety pod and store it under the vehicle when it is in the closed position.
2The second choice would be the ballast. I think the best idea for ballast would be to have two ballast tanks(one on each side) and have two motors with props in the vertical position( one centered in front, one centered in back ).
3The last choice would be the surveillance system aboard. One in front looking at all arms evenly. and a 360 Degree camera on top looking in all directions that is able to tilt and rotate.

1.build the props
we would need to get crates. and pvc pipes in order to build the robot
2.locate the damage points
we would be finding damaged parts all along the object.
3. build the robotic arm
we would have to build some thing that would be able to pick up and store the pods.

1. Mechanical Arm
2. Open Hatch
3. Transfer ELS pod
We think we'd be able to work well together and have the coordination and experience to do a more complicated project like building the mechanical arm or the hand needed to open the hatch.
To pick up the pod we have a jaw attached to an arm, using elastics and a rope/pulley system to control whether it is open/closed. This way we could pickup, store, and deposit the pod where we need it. To open the hatch, we would use a rotating wheel with prongs. To use this to open the arm for the airhose too, we would put it on an arm that rotated up.

find the damage points.
we would build a see through case for the camera to be able to see but not get damaged.
store the pods.
we would a tray on the sub close enough the arm so you could drop it on it.
build props.
we would use the packet the provided us and build the sunk ship.

1. Locating the damage points
We have an idea about how and where to place the camera(s) so that we could locate the damges on the submarine.
2. Building The Props
We have a good idea about how to use materials to build them.
3. Open the Hatch
We have a pretty good idea about how the arm could work.
